Rats and Mice Control

Amongst the most common rodents to infest most households are rats and mice. AB Pest Control along with most people naturally dislike the concept of rodents scurrying around the home.

Rats and mice

What we call rats and mice aren’t the scientific terms, but rather refer to a range of rodent species that share similar characteristics. Mice are smaller than rats and have shorter bodies amongst other differences, but they share many similarities when it comes to behavior. They all have long incisor teeth which grow continuously, allowing them to burrow and chew through materials in the home, which gives them plenty of spaces to make their nests. Their skeletons are flexible, too, meaning that they can squeeze into tight spaces, which is how they usually enter the home to begin with. Most worrying for homeowners, they are communal animals. Rats breed more slowly than mice, but rodents can quickly grow to outnumber the humans in the home.

The risks of letting them stay

Rodents like rats and mice are bad for the home as well as the health of those living in it. They can cause a lot of material destruction, chewing through plasterboard, wood, clothing, furniture, and even the foundations of the home. What’s more, they are constantly on the search for food and can eat a kitchen pantry in no time.

Rodents can also carry serious diseases like leptospirosis, salmonella, and even typhoid fever. They spread it through bites and scratches, and their urine, feces, and saliva which can contaminate food and water sources. What’s more, they carry ticks and fleas which can carry their own risks for you and your pets. Even if the mouse or rat were entirely healthy, their dander can cause and exacerbate respiratory conditions like asthma.

Signs you have rats and mice in your home

Because they are so small and tend to hide away from sight, you might not see any rodents in your home, but you might glimpse some of the signs they have been there. These include:

  • You spot droppings, which look like little brown/black pellets with squeezed ends or rice grains
  • You can hear unexplained scratching noises in the home
  • You get a musty smell from air vents or other openings
  • You spot marks of rodent movement like dirty marks or foot and tail prints
  • You find a nest, which are often hidden away and made of shredded materials like fabrics or newspaper

If you spot any of the signs mentioned above, it’s best to act on it as soon as possible.

The most effective way to get rid of them

A wide range of products are sold with the purpose of eliminating or driving away rodents from the home. This includes traps as well as devices that produce sounds that mice and rats dislike. However, while these devices can work temporarily, or may catch one or two mice, they rarely deal with a full infestation. For that, you need to enlist the help of a practiced pest control specialist. They can check and clear the exterior, crawl space, and attic entirely to ensure that rodents have nowhere to hide.

If you’ve spotted the sign of rodents in your home, then pest control is the best way to get rid of them. The health of your home and your family could depend on it.
